Today, I tell you the story of a Syrian man from the occupied Golan heights, who you may have not heard of. His name is Sidqi al Maqt, a Syrian Druze who served 32 years of his life in the Israeli occupation jails, 27 years of which were consecutive.
The Israeli occupation authorities released al-Maqt in 2012 after serving 27 years in imprisonment, only to arrest him again on February 25th, 2015, after they broke into his family’s house and tampered with his belongings and confiscated his mobile phones and laptop without giving any justification for this blatant transgression.
Later, we figured out that the Israeli occupation authorities arrested al-Maqt, the longest-serving Syrian prisoner in Israeli jails after unveiling the direct support provided by the Israeli army to the armed terrorist organizations fighting the Syrian Army in southern Syria, particularly Al-Nusra Front, which is on the UN’s terror list. Israel, however, accused al-Maqt of spying for Syria.
On May 16th, 2017, the occupation authorities issued a 14-year imprisonment sentence against al-Maqt after his trial had been postponed dozens of times.
Yesterday, Sadqi al-Maqt issued a statement saying that following the efforts of President Bashar al-Assad and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he will be released to Damascus for 20 years. Five years later, he is entitled to apply for a return to the occupied Golan.
The Russian military attaché to Israel met with him in the prison and offered him the deal but al Maqt rejected the offer, demanding that he instead be allowed to return to his home town in the occupied Golan Heights, where his family and roots belong to.
ِAl-Maqt said: I would like to make it clear to the public that although I miss embracing Damascus and my freedom, I refuse to embrace Damascus on Israeli terms, and I do not accept the freedom dictated by the restrictions of the occupation.
Finally, Al-Maqt thanked Assad and the Syrian Army saying that he felt great strength as he was sitting in front of the Russian military attache because Syrians have a sincere and patriotic leader named Bashar al-Assad following his case from Damascus.
Al-Maqt is a great example of the steadfastness of the Syrian people in the Golan Heights which is occupied since 1967. Despite the efforts of the occupation authorities to change the demographics of the area and the convictions of the people, the vast majority of Syrians remain loyal to their country and believe the day will come when the walls of the occupation are broken.
