On June 5, an Israeli-contracted Energean Power vessel arrived at a disputed maritime border with Lebanon with the aim of extracting oil and gas near the Karish gas field, which has reignited a long-running maritime dispute between the two countries, precipitating new regional tensions. While the Lebanese government invited American senior energy adviser and mediator Amos Hochstein, Hezbollah vowed to protect the gas field if Israel takes over it.
