The Syrian Presidency says that President Assad expressed his desire to establish relations with Donetsk and Lugansk during a Russian parliamentary visit to Damascus which included representatives from Donetsk in December 2021. In this regard, Kevork Almassian said in an interview that Syria perceives the Ukrainian conflict as part of a global struggle of power and Damascus is at the heart of the rivalry between the US and Russia.
